Artificial Intelligence and Medical Research

Ahmed's research interests focus on applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to problems in medicine and healthcare.

He has participated in AI research involving medical imaging, including the development and evaluation of automated methods for multiple sclerosis lesion segmentation on brain MRI.

One of his research projects investigated automated multiple sclerosis lesion segmentation on brain MRI using custom-built artificial intelligence algorithms. The study used axial FLAIR MRI slices from multiple public datasets combined with a local dataset collected at Suez Canal University Hospital. The local dataset was annotated with the involvement of Ahmed and radiologists with varying levels of experience.

The research involved developing and evaluating segmentation models using PyTorch, iteratively improving their performance, and comparing model-generated segmentations with those produced by experienced radiologists.

Ahmed has also participated in research outside of AI, including a project involving the creation of 3D animations depicting advanced plastic surgery procedures for use as demonstrations at medical conferences, in collaboration with Dr. Miguel Ferreira, the renowned plastic surgeon from Portugal.

His research interests include:

Medical image analysis
Medical image segmentation
Computer vision
Deep learning
Artificial intelligence in healthcare
Machine learning for clinical applications

Professional Background

Ahmed has held senior engineering roles, where he has built and taken ownership of full-stack web and mobile applications. He has also founded two products in the medical education space:

Game development

Medical Background

Ahmed Talaat is a physician who earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (M.B.B.Ch.) from Suez Canal University in Egypt, graduating in October 2025.

He has a particular interest in radiology, a field that closely aligns with his interest in technology and medical imaging. During his medical internship, he spent a significant portion of his clinical training in radiology, where much of the workflow involves medical imaging systems, computers, and other technology.

He has also applied his software engineering skills directly to radiology workflows, including developing an internal tool to automate radiology report archiving and organization.

His medical training and software engineering background have therefore developed in parallel, with radiology providing a particularly natural intersection between his clinical interests, software development, and medical imaging research.

Education in Computer Science

Although his undergraduate degree is in medicine, Ahmed has pursued computer science and software engineering through extensive self-directed learning alongside his medical and professional development.

He began learning programming and problem-solving at a young age and gradually developed his skills through continuous self-study, building projects, and exploring software engineering concepts independently.

His computer science education has been driven primarily by hands-on learning and building real software, supplemented by structured courses covering computer science fundamentals, artificial intelligence, data structures and algorithms, and software engineering including:

A significant part of his development has also come from independently studying core computer science topics such as data structures, algorithms, system design, backend engineering, mobile development, and applying them directly in personal and professional projects.

This combination of structured coursework, independent study, and sustained software development has supported his progression from self-directed programming to professional software engineering and applied artificial intelligence research.

Medicine and Technology in Practice

Ahmed's medical and software backgrounds frequently intersect in practical ways. Rather than treating medicine and technology as separate areas of expertise, he applies software engineering to problems encountered in medical education, clinical workflows, and medical research.

During his clinical training, he has used his software engineering experience to identify and automate repetitive tasks in medical workflows. One example is an internal tool developed for the radiology department to automate the archiving of reports produced in Microsoft Word, organizing completed reports by date and generating consistent patient-specific filenames.

His interest in radiology is also influenced by the particularly technology-intensive nature of the specialty. Much of the work involves medical imaging systems, computers, digital workflows, and the interpretation and management of large amounts of imaging data, making it a natural area for the intersection of his medical and technical interests.

The same intersection extends to his medical education products. Through Helix and Kiwi World, he has combined his understanding of medical education with software engineering to build tools for medical students, rather than approaching educational technology solely from a technical perspective.

His research follows a similar pattern. In medical imaging research, he has applied programming, deep learning, and computer vision to clinical problems such as automated segmentation of multiple sclerosis lesions on brain MRI. Other work has involved using 3D computer graphics and animation to communicate complex plastic surgery procedures for medical conferences.

These projects reflect a broader approach to technology: using software not only as an engineering discipline, but as a tool for solving problems encountered through medical practice, education, and research.

Current Direction

Ahmed continues to work as a production software engineer while deepening his knowledge of computer science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. His current work spans software development, applied AI research, and the continued development of his medical and technical expertise.

He is particularly interested in developing stronger foundations in computer science and AI while continuing to build and maintain real-world software systems. Alongside his engineering work, he is increasingly focused on research and applications of artificial intelligence to medicine.

His medical background, with a particular interest in radiology and medical imaging, provides a domain context for this work. He is interested in problems where software engineering, computer science, and AI can be applied to practical challenges in healthcare and medical research.
